Why won't my 2023 Stingray boat shift into forward or reverse?

I have a 2023 23ft Stingray and it suddenly won't go into forward or reverse. The engine starts and idles fine, but when I move the throttle lever, nothing happens at the prop. What should I check first?

Answer

On a 2023 Stingray, a total loss of shifting usually stems from a disconnected engine linkage or a blown fuse in the fly-by-wire network. Inspect the linkage at the engine block or outboard cowling while a crewmate moves the helm control to isolate the fault immediately.

Fly-by-Wire Shift Systems

Many modern 23-foot Stingrays fitted with 200hp to 250hp Suzuki, Yamaha or Mercury outboards use electronic controls instead of steel cables. The binnacle sends a digital signal to an actuator on the engine. If this network loses power, the engine idles but refuses to shift.

Check the power supply first. Look for a blown 5-amp or 15-amp inline fuse near the battery switches or inside the under-cowl fuse box. Next, inspect the network data cables. Reach behind the helm binnacle and verify the twist-collar connectors remain tight. A loose NMEA 2000 drop cable or proprietary network plug instantly severs communication between the helm and the shift actuator.

Mechanical Cable Disconnection

Stingrays with traditional mechanical controls use SeaStar Xtreme or similar push-pull cables. A sudden loss of resistance at the throttle lever indicates a failure. The most common cause is a disconnected cable end at the engine.

Remove the outboard cowling or the engine hatch for a Mercruiser sterndrive. Locate the shift mechanism where the cable terminates. You need to find a brass trunnion block and a stainless steel split pin. A poorly secured pin often vibrates out, allowing the cable eyelet to slip off the shift arm. If the cable remains attached but the inner stainless steel core snaps out of the jacket during movement, the cable has broken internally. A replacement 18-foot or 20-foot control cable costs around £45 to £65 and takes two hours to thread through the starboard gunwale.

Helm Binnacle Internal Faults

If the cables and electronic connections at the engine look intact, the fault might lie inside the helm control box. On mechanical binnacles, the lever connects to a main gear wheel via a small steel roll pin or set screw. Jamming the boat into gear aggressively can shear this pin.
