Where is the shift linkage located on a 2018 Robalo Explorer?

I have a 2018 Robalo Explorer and the gears are feeling a bit stiff when I shift into forward or reverse. I want to check the cables and grease the mechanism, but I am not sure exactly where the shift linkage is located on this specific boat. Can you point me in the right direction?

Answer

On a 2018 Robalo Explorer, the shift linkage splits between the helm binnacle control and the outboard shift slide under the engine cowling. These boats feature factory-rigged Yamaha outboards (typically the F150 or F200), placing the mechanical linkage on the lower starboard side of the powerhead behind the air intake.

Engine Shift Linkage

Robalo Explorers from this era run mechanical SeaStar Xtreme control cables, unless you own a twin-engine model with Yamaha Digital Electronic Controls. Finding the linkage on a standard mechanical setup requires a few simple steps.

  • Unlatch and lift off the main engine cowling.
  • Look at the lower starboard side of the engine block to find two heavy cables entering the lower pan through a rubber grommet.
  • Identify the upper cable as the throttle and the lower cable as the shift.
  • Follow the shift cable to its termination point on a metal pivot arm. This linkage translates the horizontal push and pull of the cable into rotational movement on the vertical shift shaft dropping into the gearbox.

Helm Binnacle Linkage

The forward end of the shift linkage sits at the helm. Robalo used Yamaha 704 top-mount binnacles or concealed flush-mount units for the 2018 Explorer lineup.

Access the linkage by looking behind the helm console. On most Explorers, you reach the back of the binnacle by opening the head compartment door and looking up behind the dashboard. You will see the forward ends of the shift and throttle cables attaching to the base of the control lever mechanism with split pins and pivot pins. Removing the plastic cover (secured by two Phillips screws) exposes the upper gear mechanism for top-side service.

Isolating Stiff Shifting

Stiff gears require you to isolate the fault to the binnacle, the cable or the engine. Always switch off the engine and disconnect the kill cord before touching moving linkages.
