How do I register a boat trailer in Victoria?

I've bought a used 4.2-metre tinny on an unregistered single-axle trailer in Victoria. The trailer has a manufacturer's plate, but I'm unsure whether I need an inspection or roadworthy certificate before registering it.

Answer

Register your boat trailer separately from your boat through VicRoads, using its identification number and rated aggregate trailer mass to determine the registration requirements. A purpose-built boat trailer needs registration for public-road use in Victoria, even if it falls below the usual exemption limits for other trailers.

Check identification and registration history

Find the vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis number stamped on the drawbar. Compare it with the manufacturer's identification plate and the seller's paperwork. Photograph both before cleaning or repainting anything; resolve mismatched numbers or missing identification before spending money on registration.

The exemption for trailers weighing less than 200kg empty does not apply to trailers specifically built to carry boats. Displaying the towing vehicle's registration number on a boat trailer does not meet its registration requirement. See Transport Victoria's registration exemptions.

Check which transaction you need:

  • Currently registered in Victoria: transfer the existing registration into your name. Notify VicRoads within 14 days of purchase.
  • Recently expired registration: check whether you can renew it. VicRoads allows renewal when registration expired less than three months ago.
  • Unregistered, interstate or never registered: confirm which Victorian registration process applies before booking.

Keep a dated receipt recording the seller, buyer, price and trailer VIN, even if you bought the boat and trailer together. See VicRoads' buying and transfer guidance.

Read the weight plate

ATM means aggregate trailer mass: the maximum permitted total mass of the loaded trailer, including the load supported through its coupling. Tare is the empty trailer's mass. Neither figure is simply the boat's advertised hull weight.

  • ATM up to 750kg: use the Light trailer registration form. The trailer normally does not need to attend.
  • ATM 751 to 4,500kg: use the Vehicle registration form and take the trailer to the appointment.
  • ATM above 4,500kg: follow the heavy-vehicle registration process.

Use the manufacturer's recorded rating, not an estimate based on axle count. Removing the boat from a 1,500kg-rated trailer does not make it a 750kg-rated trailer. See VicRoads' trailer appointment guidance.
