Can I register a boat trailer without a title?
I've found a used boat trailer with a readable VIN plate, but the seller only has a bill of sale and no title. Can I register it, and what paperwork should I get before paying?
Answer
Yes, you may be able to register a boat trailer without a title, depending on where you register it, its age and weight, and whether a title was ever required. Before paying, check the trailer's identification number and the registration authority's requirements, because a bill of sale alone may not provide an acceptable ownership history.
Check identity and registration rules
Find the VIN or chassis number, usually stamped into the drawbar or shown on a manufacturer's plate near the coupling. Photograph the number, manufacturer's plate and any existing registration plate, then check them against the seller's paperwork.
In the United States, the state motor vehicle authority generally handles boat trailers separately from boats. Title requirements vary by state, trailer weight and sometimes age. A trailer that legally has no title in one state may need additional evidence for registration in another.
Check which weight the authority requires: unladen weight is the empty trailer's weight; gross vehicle weight rating is its maximum permitted loaded weight. The boat's displacement is neither.
In the UK, ordinary domestic use of a privately owned boat trailer generally does not involve a US-style trailer title. Separate registration requirements can apply to international travel, so establish the country and intended use before following American DMV advice.
Establish why the title is missing
The reason for the missing title determines the next step:
- The title was lost: if the trailer was titled, the most straightforward route is normally for the recorded owner to obtain a duplicate and transfer it correctly.
- The trailer was exempt from titling: the authority may accept a previous registration, bill of sale and evidence that no title was required.
- It has never been registered: a manufactured trailer may need its manufacturer's certificate or statement of origin, purchase documents and possibly an inspection.
- The ownership chain is incomplete: an estate sale, abandoned trailer or seller who never transferred ownership may require a specific legal process.
A boat title does not automatically cover its trailer. A registration plate attached to the mudguard does not prove that the seller owns the trailer either.
Gather paperwork before buying
Ask the relevant registration office to confirm the procedure for this trailer. Supply the VIN, year if known, manufacturer, weight information, previous registration jurisdiction and available documents.
