How can I register a boat trailer if I don't have its title?

I've bought a used boat trailer privately, but the seller only gave me a handwritten receipt and says the title has been lost. There is an identification plate on the frame. What paperwork do I need before I can register it in my name?

Answer

You can often register a boat trailer without its original title, but the process depends on where you live, the trailer's weight and whether a title was ever issued. Check the trailer's identification number and your registration authority's requirements first: a lost title needs a different solution from a trailer that never needed one.

Check identity and local rules

The word title usually points to a US registration question, so this answer mainly covers the US. Each state sets its own trailer rules. Some require titles for most trailers; others exempt particular weights, ages or trailer categories. Registration and a certificate of title are separate documents.

Find the manufacturer's plate or stamped vehicle identification number, usually on the drawbar or front section of the chassis. Photograph it before cleaning. Use a cloth and mild cleaner; grinding or sanding can remove faint markings. Record:

  • The VIN or chassis number, copied exactly.
  • Manufacturer, model and year, if shown.
  • Gross vehicle weight rating and any stated unladen weight.
  • Previous registration number and the state or country that issued it.

Modern US trailers normally have a 17-character VIN; older trailers may have shorter serial numbers. Neither the boat's hull identification number nor an axle number substitutes for the trailer's chassis identification.

Ask the relevant DMV, county tax office or equivalent authority whether this trailer needs a title. Check whether its weight threshold refers to empty weight or maximum loaded weight.

Replacing a lost title

If a title is required and one already exists, the simplest route is usually for the recorded owner to obtain a duplicate and transfer it to you. A seller's receipt does not automatically replace the title.

  1. Ask the seller for their previous registration and any purchase documents.
  2. Have the recorded owner request a replacement title from the issuing authority.
  3. Check that the VIN matches the trailer and that any recorded lender's interest has been released.
  4. Complete the ownership transfer and submit the required registration application, identification, taxes and fees.

If the seller never transferred the trailer into their own name, the authority may require the missing ownership transfers to be resolved. Do not sign a previous owner's name or accept an altered document.

If you have not paid yet, make satisfactory ownership paperwork a condition of the sale. A cheap trailer can become expensive if you cannot establish ownership.
