What oil should I use in a Volvo Penta 5.0 GXi, and how much does it need?
I'm changing the oil and filter on my Volvo Penta 5.0 GXi petrol V8. What grade should I buy, and how many litres will I need including the filter?
Answer
A Volvo Penta 5.0 GXi typically takes 5.2 litres (5.5 US quarts) of engine oil with a new filter, with the final level set on the dipstick. Volvo Penta synthetic petrol-engine oil is the straightforward choice, but check your engine's full designation and serial number before choosing between the SAE 30 specified in many older manuals and a later approved multigrade such as SAE 10W-40.
Check the engine identification
Find the engine identification plate and record the complete model designation, including any letters after 5.0 GXi, and the serial number. The boat's build year is no reliable guide: the engine may predate the hull or have been replaced.
Volvo Penta's petrol-engine oil recommendations have changed over time. An older handbook and a current oil bottle may show different viscosities, and both may be correct. If they disagree, ask a Volvo Penta dealer to confirm the current approved replacement against your serial number.
This is a petrol V8. Oil recommendations and capacities for Volvo Penta D-series diesels do not apply, even when the containers carry the same manufacturer's name.
Choose the oil specification
Many older 5.0 GXi handbooks specify synthetic SAE 30 engine oil. Volvo Penta also supplies synthetic SAE 10W-40 petrol-engine oil for applications where it is approved. Follow the recommendation for your engine, including any documented replacement specification.
- If your handbook specifies SAE 30: use the specified synthetic marine engine oil or its confirmed current replacement. Ordinary SAE 30 lawnmower oil is not an automatic equivalent.
- If SAE 10W-40 is approved: choose Volvo Penta's synthetic petrol-engine oil or an alternative that explicitly meets the required specification.
- If considering another brand: match the viscosity and performance requirements. A marine petrol rating such as NMMA FC-W is useful, but does not override the engine's specified grade.
Do not choose a generic 15W-40 diesel oil simply because it carries a Volvo VDS approval. Some oils suit both petrol and diesel engines, but check suitability against the engine requirements and the product specification.
For topping up, use the oil already in the engine where possible. If you cannot identify it or establish the service history, change the oil and filter to give yourself a clear starting point.
