How do I change the outdrive oil on a Volvo Penta?

I want to change the outdrive oil on my Volvo Penta while the boat is ashore. How do I identify the right oil, find the drain and filler plugs, and make sure I have filled it to the correct level?

Boat type: motorboat with Volvo Penta sterndrive. Topics: Sterndrive maintenance, Gear oil, Seasonal servicing.

Answer

Change Volvo Penta outdrive oil with the boat ashore: identify the drive, drain and inspect the old oil, renew the plug seals and refill with the specified oil, following that drive's procedure. Check the drive identification plate first, because the engine model alone does not tell you the oil grade, quantity, filling method or checking position.

Identify the drive

Volvo Penta D6 identifies the engine; the attached drive has its own model and serial number. Find these on the drive's identification plate and match them to the operator's manual.

Older 270, 280 and 290 drives, later SX and DPS units, and DPH or DPR drives do not all share one oil-change procedure. The version matters, even within a family.

  • Oil: many later drives use synthetic SAE 75W-90 gear oil, but some older units specify engine oil. Use the exact Volvo Penta specification for your drive.
  • Quantity: buy the stated capacity with a little spare for topping up. Do not assume every Duoprop takes the same amount.
  • Seals: get the correct drain-plug and filler-plug washers or O-rings before opening anything.
  • Tools: have a drain tray, correctly fitting plug tools, a torque wrench, a measuring jug and any filling adaptor specified for the drive.

Record the plug and propeller-fastener torque figures from the matching manual. No single torque setting is safe for every Volvo Penta outdrive plug.

Position and drain the drive

Keep the boat securely supported, isolate engine starting and support the drive as instructed before working near the propellers or beneath a raised drive.

Clean around the filler and drain points before removing plugs. Loosen the filler first. If it is seized and you have already drained the gearcase, you cannot refill it.

The drive procedure in the D6 manual specifies 35° trim for both changing and checking the oil. This applies to the drive covered by that manual; do not assume it applies to an SX, DPS or older Aquamatic.

  1. Trim the drive to the position stated in its manual.
  2. Remove the upper cover and filler plug where fitted.
  3. Remove the propeller or propellers if needed to expose the drain. Keep thrust washers, spacers and nuts in their fitted order.
  4. Place the tray underneath, remove the drain plug and its gasket, and let the oil drain fully.

On the arrangement described in the D6 manual, removing the propellers gives access to the drain. Other drives have different access points. Identify the plug from the manual's drawing before undoing it.
