What rig and sail inventory came standard on the X-Yachts X-372?

I'm looking at an X-Yachts X-372 with several old genoas and a spinnaker, and I'd like to establish its original specification. Did these boats come with a masthead or fractional rig, and which sails were included from new?

Boat type: sailing yacht. Topics: Rigging, Sails, Original specifications.

Answer

The X-Yachts X-372 brochure lists masthead and fractional rigs, each with its own sail-area schedule. It lists a mainsail, three genoa sizes, a storm jib and two spinnaker types, but does not confirm that every sail came as standard.

Identify the rig

Check where the forestay attaches to the mast: the two published sail plans have substantially different proportions. On the masthead version, it attaches at or close to the masthead. On the fractional version, it attaches below the masthead, leaving a clear length of mast above it.

The masthead plan has a smaller mainsail and larger headsails. The fractional plan carries more area in the mainsail, with smaller headsails and spinnakers. This distinction matters when identifying loose sails, comparing brokerage particulars or ordering replacements from a sailmaker.

The brochure documents both configurations, but the supplied specification does not identify a default rig for every production year or market. Confirm the individual boat's configuration from its rig, original order paperwork and records of any subsequent mast replacement.

Masthead sail areas

The X-372 brochure gives these areas for the masthead configuration:

  • Mainsail: 28.2 m², or 303.5 ft².
  • 150% genoa: 47.8 m², or 514.5 ft².
  • 125% genoa: 39.8 m², or 428.4 ft².
  • 100% genoa: 31.9 m², or 343.4 ft².
  • Storm jib: 10.0 m², or 107.6 ft².
  • IOR all-round spinnaker: 103.6 m², or 1,115.2 ft².
  • IOR reaching spinnaker: 100.0 m², or 1,076.4 ft².

The mainsail and 150% genoa total 76.0 m² of published sail area. That gives a useful comparison figure, but this combination is not suitable for all conditions. The smaller headsails reduce area progressively as the breeze builds.

Fractional sail areas

The brochure lists these figures for the fractional configuration, in the same sail order:

  • Mainsail: 41.3 m², or 445.1 ft².
  • 150% genoa: 40.9 m², or 440.3 ft².
  • 125% genoa: 34.1 m², or 366.8 ft².
  • 100% genoa: 27.3 m², or 293.5 ft².
  • Storm jib: 8.7 m², or 93.6 ft².
  • IOR all-round spinnaker: 88.4 m², or 951.6 ft².
  • IOR reaching spinnaker: 85.8 m², or 923.6 ft².
