What is the standard rig and sail inventory for an X-372?
I'm looking at an X-Yachts X-372 with a mainsail, several overlapping genoas and a spinnaker in the sail locker. Were these boats masthead or fractional rigged, and what sail sizes should the original inventory contain?
Answer
The X-Yachts X-372 was offered with masthead and fractional rigs, so no single sail plan applies to every boat. The published masthead plan specifies a 28.2 m² mainsail and 47.8 m² 150% genoa, while the fractional plan specifies a 41.3 m² mainsail and 40.9 m² 150% genoa; these options do not establish which sails came with an individual boat.
Identify the rig
Check where the forestay attaches to the mast. On the masthead version, it attaches at or very close to the masthead; on the fractional version, it attaches below the masthead, leaving a distinct length of mast above it. This determines which sail areas apply.
Sail proportions offer another clue. The masthead plan pairs a smaller mainsail with a larger overlapping genoa. The fractional version carries substantially more mainsail area and smaller headsails. An advertisement or the number of sails aboard cannot identify the rig on its own.
Compare any original sail plan, mast paperwork and sailmaker's measurements with the installation aboard. A replacement mast, altered boom or later headsail furling system can affect which sails fit, even if the boat retains its original rig type.
Masthead sail areas
The published X-372 masthead sail plan lists:
- Mainsail: 28.2 m², approximately 303.5 sq ft.
- 150% genoa: 47.8 m², approximately 514.5 sq ft.
- 125% genoa: 39.8 m², approximately 428.4 sq ft.
- 100% headsail: 31.9 m², approximately 343.4 sq ft.
- Storm jib: 10.0 m², approximately 107.6 sq ft.
- IOR all-round spinnaker: 103.6 m², approximately 1,115.2 sq ft.
- IOR reaching spinnaker: 100.0 m², approximately 1,076.4 sq ft.
The mainsail and 150% genoa give a combined published area of 76.0 m². Use that figure when comparing specifications, but first check which headsail percentage each advertised total uses.
Fractional sail areas
The fractional sail plan lists the sizes below. Its larger mainsail means a masthead mainsail is not an interchangeable replacement.
- Mainsail: 41.3 m², approximately 445 sq ft.
- 150% genoa: 40.9 m², approximately 440.3 sq ft.
- 125% genoa: 34.1 m², approximately 366.8 sq ft.
- 100% headsail: 27.3 m², approximately 293.5 sq ft.
- Storm jib: 8.7 m², approximately 93.6 sq ft.
- IOR all-round spinnaker: 88.4 m², approximately 951.6 sq ft.
- IOR reaching spinnaker: 85.8 m², approximately 923.6 sq ft.
