How do I install and configure a remote control for a Sleipner thruster system?
I want to add a wireless remote to my Sleipner thruster so I can operate it away from the helm. How do I identify the right kit, connect the receiver and pair the handset?
Answer
Install a Sleipner wireless remote by connecting a compatible receiver to the existing thruster control wiring, pairing the handset and checking every command afloat. First establish whether your installation uses conventional Side-Power control wiring or S-Link, as this determines the receiver, harness and configuration procedure.
Identify your control system
Check the model labels on the thruster, helm panel and existing control boxes. Photograph the labels and the connectors behind the panel. The thruster model alone may not identify the control arrangement, especially if equipment has been upgraded.
Older equipment often carries the Side-Power name; newer equipment carries Sleipner branding. Neither the branding nor the boat's age proves compatibility.
- Conventional controls: use a receiver and adapter harness explicitly approved for that control circuit. Many installations have four-wire control connections, but check the plugs and wiring diagram.
- S-Link controls: require equipment designed for the S-Link network and any specified network connection components.
- Bow and stern thrusters: need a handset and receiver arrangement that supports both units, with the correct connections or network assignments.
A wireless handset does not automatically give a proportional thruster variable-speed control. Check which commands the remote supports. Check the receiver's supply rating too: a 24 V thruster motor does not necessarily mean every control accessory accepts a direct 24 V supply.
Mount and connect the receiver
Isolate both the thruster battery supply and the control supply before touching the wiring. Keep people clear of the tunnel whenever the system is energised.
Check that the existing helm panel works correctly before installation. A remote will not cure weak batteries, faulty contactors or an intermittent control cable.
- Choose a dry, accessible position for the receiver, following its mounting and antenna instructions. Avoid metal enclosures and positions against heavy power cables, chargers or other transmitting equipment.
- Route the supplied control harness without stretching it. Support cables, protect them at bulkheads and form a drip loop wherever water could track towards a connection.
- On a conventional system, fit the specified adapter or splitter at the connection shown in the receiver diagram, retaining control from the helm panel.
- On S-Link, connect the receiver using the specified network arrangement. Preserve the backbone and its required termination. Do not improvise branches or add terminators indiscriminately.
- If the receiver requires a separate supply, use the specified cable size and fuse. Take power from the point shown in the installation diagram.
