How do I update a Garmin chartplotter using ActiveCaptain?
I want to update my Garmin chartplotter using the ActiveCaptain app on my phone. Do I download the update at home first, and do I need a memory card or an internet connection on the boat?
Answer
Download the software update to the Garmin ActiveCaptain app while your phone has internet access, then connect to the chartplotter's Wi-Fi, transfer the files and accept the installation on the plotter. You normally need a memory card configured for ActiveCaptain, and the plotter's software and charts need separate updates.
Check compatibility, storage and power
Check the exact model before starting. ActiveCaptain works with compatible Wi-Fi-equipped GPSMAP and ECHOMAP chartplotters, but support varies within older ranges. Garmin charts or a wireless connection alone do not establish compatibility.
For most compatible units, a blank 8 to 32 GB Class 10 microSD card formatted FAT32 is a straightforward choice. Use an SD adaptor if the plotter has a full-size slot. Some newer models accept larger cards, so check the model's manual for its capacity limit.
Use a separate card where possible. Do not erase or format a card containing purchased charts, saved tracks or your only waypoint backup. ActiveCaptain uses the card to store files, and some models ask you to approve formatting during setup.
Keep the plotter on a reliable battery supply throughout installation. Do not switch off its breaker or remove the card while an update is running.
Set up ActiveCaptain
- Install the free Garmin ActiveCaptain app on your phone or tablet and sign in to your Garmin account.
- With the plotter switched on, insert the memory card and open ActiveCaptain from its home screen or menus.
- Choose the option to create or configure an ActiveCaptain memory card and follow the prompts. Wording varies by model and software version.
- Enable the plotter's Wi-Fi network. On many units this is under ActiveCaptain > Wi-Fi Network; other versions put wireless settings under communications. Set a network name and password if requested.
- In your phone's Wi-Fi settings, join that network using the password shown or configured on the plotter.
- Return to ActiveCaptain and follow the prompts to connect and register the plotter. Allow local-network access if your phone requests it.
The first connection may establish the owner account. If a second-hand plotter appears registered to somebody else, resolve that registration rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
Download and install the software
After the initial pairing, connect your phone to home Wi-Fi or mobile data. Open the app's Software Updates area, check for an update for the registered plotter and download it in full. Menu names and automatic-download options vary between app versions.
