How do I update the charts and software on my Garmin chartplotter?
I've got a Garmin chartplotter with charts on a memory card, but I'm unsure whether updating the software also updates the charts. How do I check what I need and install the updates without losing my waypoints?
Answer
Update a compatible Garmin chartplotter through the ActiveCaptain app, or use a computer and memory card for updates your model supports. Software and charts are separate downloads: Garmin normally supplies software updates free, while chart updates depend on your chart product and update entitlement.
Check your model and charts
Find the exact model name, such as GPSMAP 923, GPSMAP 7408 or ECHOMAP UHD 95sv. Check the installed software version under Settings > System > System Information > Software Information, or the equivalent About screen; menu wording varies by generation.
Identify your charts: built-in mapping, a Garmin Navionics+ or Vision+ card, or an older BlueChart g3/g3 Vision product. A software update does not refresh chart soundings, buoy positions or harbour details. Older plotters cannot necessarily read newer chart products.
- Export waypoints, routes and tracks to a separate memory card using the User Data or User Data Transfer menu.
- Keep a second copy of that backup on your computer.
- Check the model's supported card type, capacity and format. A 32 GB microSDHC card formatted FAT32 suits many units, but older models can have smaller limits.
- Use a separate blank card for software updates unless Garmin's instructions specifically say otherwise.
Carry out updates alongside with a reliable battery supply. Do not switch off power or remove the update card during installation.
Update through ActiveCaptain
ActiveCaptain is usually the simplest route for Garmin units with compatible Wi-Fi. Many GPSMAP and ECHOMAP models support it, but the Garmin badge alone does not confirm compatibility.
- Install ActiveCaptain on your phone or tablet and sign in to your Garmin account.
- Insert a suitable memory card if the plotter requires one for ActiveCaptain storage, then enable ActiveCaptain from the plotter's menu.
- Follow the pairing instructions and connect the phone to the plotter's Wi-Fi network.
- With internet access available, download the offered software update in the app. Reconnect to the plotter's Wi-Fi to transfer it, then accept the installation prompt on the plotter.
- For charts, open the app's chart management options, check your registered product and entitlement, and download the available coverage before transferring it.
Your phone may need to switch between an internet connection and the plotter's local Wi-Fi. Download large chart regions over dependable broadband before going aboard. Transferring them can take considerably longer than updating software.
