What anchor size and chain length are suitable for an Albin Delta 31?

I'm sorting out the anchoring gear on my Albin Delta 31 for cruising in Denmark and Sweden. What weight of anchor and what size and length of chain would you fit for reliable overnight anchoring?

Answer

For an Albin Delta 31, a modern anchor weighing 12 to 15 kg with 40 to 50 metres of calibrated 8 mm galvanised chain makes a sensible cruising setup. Choose the upper end for regular overnight anchoring, and calculate deployment using the distance from seabed to bow roller at the highest expected tide.

Check the bow fittings

Before buying, check what fits the bow roller and how you will recover the gear. An anchor that catches the pulpit or strikes the stem makes every anchoring manoeuvre difficult on a yacht this size.

Measure the roller width, clearance beneath the pulpit and distance between roller and stem. Use the anchor manufacturer's full-size template where available. The shank, fluke and any roll bar must clear the boat throughout launch and recovery.

Check the boat's loaded cruising displacement against the anchor maker's sizing chart, including water, fuel and equipment. Boats of the same model can carry quite different loads. Previous owners may also have changed the roller, locker or windlass.

If you have a windlass, identify its chain wheel specification before ordering chain. Nominal diameter alone does not establish compatibility; link dimensions and calibration must match.

Choose an anchor size

For mixed Scandinavian cruising, I would favour a modern scoop or concave-fluke anchor around 15 kg, provided it fits. A Rocna Original 15 kg is one example to check against the bow arrangement. Other designs have different geometry and weight increments, so compare their individual sizing charts.

  • Sheltered coastal use: a suitable modern anchor around 12 kg is a reasonable choice if its manufacturer's chart covers the loaded boat.
  • Regular overnight anchoring: approximately 15 kg gives a useful margin without an excessive increase in handling weight.
  • Conventional plough: a 16 kg Lewmar Delta is an option if its shape suits the roller, although weight alone does not make different designs equivalent.

Experienced cruising owners often carry anchors substantially above the minimum recommendation. The extra capacity helps, but setting technique and suitable seabed still matter. Even a heavy anchor can skate across weed or fail to penetrate hard ground.

Balance chain length and weight

For this boat, 8 mm calibrated galvanised chain is a practical starting point. Buy traceable chain with a stated grade and working load, plus compatible, rated connecting hardware. Do not choose by diameter alone.
