Where does the plastic clip go on an Ocean Signal PLB3 personal locator beacon?

I've unpacked my Ocean Signal PLB3 and there's a little plastic piece loose in the box. Where does it go, and should it stay attached when I fit the beacon to my lifejacket?

Answer

The plastic antenna rewind tool supplied with the Ocean Signal PLB3 goes temporarily through the hole in the top of the beacon to rewind the antenna. If you mean a clip or slider that stays fitted, identify it before fitting it: the activation slider covers the coiled antenna, while the lifejacket mounting fittings secure the beacon to the jacket.

Identify the plastic part

First check whether the antenna is neatly enclosed beneath its activation slider. A loose accessory does not necessarily mean a part is missing from the assembled beacon.

There are three possible parts:

  • Antenna rewind tool: a separate tool supplied in the box, inserted through the top hole to coil the antenna during installation or resetting.
  • Activation slider: the removable cover over the antenna, with two slots for the flat activation tape. This belongs on the beacon.
  • Lifejacket installation fitting: a mounting component that secures the beacon to a compatible lifejacket. Its position depends on the jacket and installation kit.

The activation slider and arming slider are different parts. The PLB3 overview labels the arming slider separately and shows it in the safe position. Do not move either control just to find a home for a loose accessory.

The antenna rewind tool

This is a temporary fitting tool. Remove it before normal use. After fitting, keep it with the beacon's installation instructions. You will need it if the antenna has to be rewound.

The manufacturer's winding procedure starts with the antenna end cap in its recess. Pass the tool through the hole in the top of the PLB3 so it engages the antenna immediately behind the end cap.

Rotate the tool anticlockwise until the antenna is fully wound. Hold it in place to restrain the coil while installing the activation slider. Do not withdraw the tool while it is still holding the antenna coiled.

If the antenna is correctly stowed and the activation slider is fitted, leave the beacon closed rather than opening it to try the tool.
