How do I calibrate a Raymarine wind instrument?

My Raymarine wind indicator shows different apparent wind angles on port and starboard tack. How do I calibrate it, and should I adjust the masthead alignment or the wind speed setting?

Boat type: sailing yacht. Topics: Wind instruments, Instrument calibration, Marine electronics.

Answer

Calibrate a Raymarine wind instrument by completing your model's wind-vane linearisation routine, then adjusting masthead alignment until apparent wind angles agree on both tacks. First check the display model and masthead sensor connection, because an ST60 or i60 uses a different procedure from an i70 system with an iTC-5 converter.

Check the display and sensor

Read the model name on the display. Common installations include ST60, ST60+, i60 Wind and i70/i70s. Establish whether the masthead cable connects directly to a wind instrument or to an iTC-5, which converts analogue sensor signals for the SeaTalkng network.

The display showing wind information may simply repeat data from another unit. Make calibration changes at the instrument or supported network interface that controls the sensor.

  • Check that the masthead vane moves freely and the cups rotate smoothly.
  • Inspect accessible plugs, cable joints and the mast-foot connection for corrosion, moisture or damaged conductors.
  • Confirm that the display shows apparent wind angle, rather than true wind angle, before assessing alignment.
  • Photograph the existing calibration settings so you can restore them.

A fixed angular error usually points to alignment. Investigate jumping readings, a sticking vane or cups that stop in a steady breeze before calibrating. If inspection requires going aloft, use a properly secured climbing arrangement with an independent safety line and a competent person tending it.

Complete wind-vane linearisation

Linearisation compensates for errors in the wind-vane sensor's response as it rotates. Alignment establishes where the boat's bow lies relative to the sensor. These are separate adjustments: changing the alignment offset will not correct an uneven sensor response.

On ST60/ST60+ and i60 installations, follow the model's wind-vane linearisation procedure. This normally involves slow circles followed by wind-angle alignment. Follow the matching handbook's specified boat speed, turn rate and completion indication. Raymarine instruments do not all use the same button sequence.

With an i70/i70s and iTC-5 installation, access wind calibration through the transducer setup menus. A compatible Axiom installation can also calibrate iTC-5 transducers through its designated data-master display, subject to software support.

Carry out manoeuvres in open water, with someone watching for traffic. Do not substitute an automatic compass-calibration routine for wind-vane calibration: they calibrate different sensors.
