How do I reinstall the retaining ring on an Evinrude E-TEC injector?
I've removed a ring from an injector on my Evinrude E-TEC and I'm struggling to get it back on. How should I fit it, and how do I check that it is properly seated?
Answer
If yours is an external steel circlip, refit it with correctly sized external circlip pliers, opening it just enough to pass over the injector before releasing it fully into its groove. First confirm the ring type and position on your particular E-TEC injector: a wire retainer, sealing ring or internal injector component needs a different procedure.
Identify the retaining ring
Check the engine's full model number and the injector's part number against the matching BRP/Evinrude parts diagram. E-TEC covers several engine families, including G2 models, so horsepower alone cannot identify the correct arrangement.
Start with the ring's construction:
- Flat steel ring with two pierced ears: usually a circlip, fitted with circlip pliers.
- Round wire ring without plier holes: a wire retainer, which may need a specific fitting method.
- Rubber or plastic ring: potentially a seal or backing ring; do not stretch it with circlip pliers.
Establish whether the ring sits in an exposed external groove or belongs inside the injector assembly. If it came out while you were dismantling the injector body, stop and have an E-TEC injector specialist identify it before proceeding.
Before opening fuel connections, follow the model's fuel-pressure relief procedure, isolate the battery and keep ignition sources away from the work area.
Inspect the ring and groove
Work over a clean, light-coloured tray to catch an escaped clip. Wear eye protection when handling spring rings.
Clean the exposed retaining groove with a lint-free cloth and inspect it under a strong light. Dirt, corrosion or a displaced adjacent component can stop the ring reaching the bottom of the groove. Do not scrape material from the injector or deepen the groove with a file.
Replace a ring that is bent, cracked, rusty, visibly spread or no longer lies flat. Use the specified replacement. A hardware-shop circlip of roughly the same diameter may have the wrong thickness or spring tension.
If a washer, collar or other component came off with the ring, check its order and orientation against the correct exploded diagram. Do not use the ring to drag a misplaced component into position.
Refit an external circlip
For a confirmed external circlip with two plier holes, follow this sequence:
- Support the injector securely without clamping its nozzle, electrical connector or precision sealing surfaces.
- Select external circlip pliers with tips that fit both holes securely. Internal circlip pliers close a ring and are unsuitable for expanding an external clip.
- Check the specified ring orientation. Some stamped circlips have a rounded face and a sharper face; follow the model's instructions for which face takes the retaining load.
- Open the ring just enough to clear the diameter it must pass over. Keep it square to the injector without twisting one end ahead of the other.
- Align the ring with the groove and release the pliers slowly. Check that both ends and the rest of the circumference have entered the groove.
