What common problems should I check for when buying a used Albin Vega 27?

I'm looking at an Albin Vega 27 with an older Volvo Penta engine and what appears to be the original variable-pitch propeller system. Which Vega-specific problems should I check, and what could turn a cheap boat into an expensive project?

Answer

Check the mast support beam and its supporting structure first, then the engine and any original Combi variable-pitch propulsion system: faults here can turn a cheap Albin Vega 27 into an expensive repair project. Next, check for deck leaks, rudder wear, grounding damage and ageing standing rigging, and make any offer subject to an independent survey and sea trial.

Mast support and deck leaks

The Vega has a deck-stepped mast, with its load carried through a beam above the main bulkhead opening. Movement or deterioration here matters more than tired upholstery or faded gelcoat.

  • Sight along the coachroof around the mast foot for a depression, distortion or radiating cracks.
  • Inspect the beam underneath, its ends and the supporting bulkhead structure for sagging, splits, damp timber and previous alterations.
  • Check whether the doorway beneath has distorted or binds, and whether bulkhead tabbing has separated from the hull.
  • Ask for photographs and invoices for any mast-beam reinforcement. A visible metal plate alone does not prove the load path is sound.

Some Vegas have been successfully reinforced, so an alteration is not automatically a defect. Unexplained movement needs assessment that takes account of rig load. Simply tightening the shrouds is no answer.

Check around chainplates, stanchion bases, windows, hatch surrounds and the mast step for water entry. Press and tap the deck around loaded fittings. Local softness or a dull response may indicate damaged core where sandwich construction is present. Confirm the construction at each suspect area before specifying repairs. Inside, look for staining, softened plywood and fresh paint concealing old leaks.

Engine and Combi propulsion

Depending on build year and later changes, a Vega may have an Albin petrol engine, a Volvo Penta diesel such as the MD6A or MD7A, or a replacement engine. Establish exactly what is fitted, including the propulsion arrangement. A replacement engine does not necessarily mean the Combi equipment was replaced.

The original Combi installation changes propeller pitch for ahead and astern. Wear, corrosion, stiff controls and neglected seals can mean expensive repairs. Check parts availability before buying.

  1. Ask for a cold start, and make sure the engine has not been warmed beforehand. Check starting time, persistent smoke, cooling-water discharge and leaks.
  2. Inspect engine mounts, exhaust elbow, hoses, fuel lines and the accessible shaft sealing arrangement.
  3. During the sea trial, operate ahead, neutral and astern repeatedly, allowing the boat to slow between changes. Check for stiff operation, delayed thrust, vibration and leakage.
  4. When lifted, have the shaft, propeller mechanism and bearings checked for play, corrosion and evidence of improvised repairs.

A conversion to a conventional gearbox and fixed-pitch propeller can be attractive if properly installed and documented. As a broad UK budgeting allowance, a small diesel replacement with installation and associated propulsion work can reach £8,000 to £12,000 or more. Obtain a quotation for the actual boat. If a petrol engine remains, ventilate the compartment and investigate any fuel smell before operating electrical equipment or starting it.
