What ground tackle size and type are suitable for a Freedom sailboat?

I want to put a dependable anchoring setup on my Freedom for overnight cruising. What size anchor, chain and rope should I carry, and what measurements do I need before ordering?

Boat type: sailing yacht. Topics: Anchoring, Ground tackle, Deck equipment.

Answer

For a Freedom around 33 to 38 ft, start with a 20 kg modern anchor, 60 to 75 m of calibrated 8 mm chain and a nylon snubber. The final specification depends on the exact model, loaded displacement, anchoring depths and windlass, as the Freedom range is too broad for one setup to suit every boat.

Check boat and windlass

Start with the model, length and cruising displacement, including water, fuel, batteries and stores. A lightly loaded coastal cruiser may need a different anchor size from a heavily equipped liveaboard of the same length.

Identify the windlass and its chain wheel, usually called the gypsy. Look for a model number and chain specification stamped on the wheel or listed in its manual. Chain diameter alone does not establish compatibility: 8 mm DIN 766 and 8 mm ISO chain can have different link dimensions. Run a sample through the gypsy before buying the full length.

Measure the bow roller, clearance to the stem and space beneath the forestay or pulpit where fitted. Check the anchor manufacturer's full-size template against the bow. Even an anchor of the right size can foul the bow or fail to launch cleanly.

Anchor and chain sizes

These are provisional cruising specifications for normally loaded yachts, rather than original Freedom factory specifications. Check the anchor manufacturer's length and displacement chart. Where the recommendations differ, choose the larger anchor.

  • Approximately 28 to 32 ft: a 15 kg modern anchor, 50 to 60 m of 8 mm chain and, for a mixed rode, approximately 14 mm nylon rope.
  • Approximately 33 to 38 ft: a 20 kg modern anchor, 60 to 75 m of 8 mm chain and approximately 16 mm nylon rope.
  • Approximately 39 to 45 ft: a 25 to 33 kg modern anchor, 75 to 100 m of 10 mm chain and approximately 18 mm nylon rope.

For exposed anchorages, substantial extra displacement or extended unattended anchoring, consider the next anchor size, checking first that it fits the bow and can be handled aboard. These ranges are not a storm-mooring specification.

Choose a modern scoop or concave-fluke design such as a Rocna, Spade, Mantus or SARCA Excel, sized using that maker's chart. Their weights are not directly interchangeable: an Excel No. 5, for example, weighs 22 kg. These designs generally suit sand and mud. Weed, rock and very soft mud demand more care with placement and setting.

Rode length and bow weight

For ordinary overnight anchoring, plan around 5:1 scope, increasing towards 7:1 when stronger conditions warrant it and swinging room allows. Measure from the seabed to the bow roller at the highest expected tide, rather than using only the depth shown below the keel.
